functional medicine

Functional medicine integrates traditional Western medical practices with what is sometimes considered “alternative” or “integrative” medicine, creating a focus on prevention through nutrition, diet, and exercise; use of the latest laboratory testing; and prescribed combinations of drugs and/or botanical medicines, supplements, therapeutic diets, detoxification programs, or stress-management techniques. The goal is to get to cause rather than simply treating symptoms with prescription medications or supplements.

Functional medicine aims to getting to the root cause of illness using a patient centered rather than a disease centered approach. This gives the physician and patient the opportunity to form a partnership in working toward regaining optimum health. This practice takes into consideration the unique genetic makeup of the individual, along with both internal (mind, body, and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning.

This is a holistic approach which works within a complex matrix model to make sense of symptoms and how the different physiologic systems impact each other. Functional medicine works to reduce inflammation, optimize nutrition, balance hormones, improve gut function, and optimize natural detoxification processes. Dr. Rasmussen works closely with patients with respect to lifestyle modification to help them achieve and maintain optimum health and wellness.
